Many patients recovering from gendering confirmation surgeries develop granulation tissue while healing from vaginoplasty. What is granulation tissue? Will it go away? What is an effective granulation tissue treatment to help?
What is Granulation Tissue?
Granulation tissue is new connective tissue and microscopic blood vessels that form on the surfaces of a wound during the healing process. Granulation tissue typically grows from the base of a wound and is able to fill wounds of almost any size. It is not harmful, and it will eventually seal over. However, we sometimes want to hasten the process, and so it can be treated in a few ways.
One option is to touch a chemical called silver nitrate to the granulation tissue. It leaves a silver residue and chemically cauterizes the surface of the granulation bud. This can help that bud of extra tissue to flatten and seal off more quickly.
