What is Scrotal Skin Reduction?
Scrotal Skin reduction is surgical removal of loose and redundant scrotal skin. This procedure is often performed in conjunction with testicle removal, bilateral orchiectomy, for transgender women. Patients report increased ease and comfort with daily tucking, since the extra stretchy scrotal skin and subcutaneous tissue is eliminated.
The redundant skin removal allows for more room when tucking the penis, since there is less volume of tissue between the thighs and buttocks. This often eliminates the need for taping, multiple clothing layers, and super tight undergarments, which often cause skin irritation and injury. The incision is placed below the stretchy, redundant area of the scrotum, in a pattern that allows for optimal healing and pelvic mobility after healing.
Who would choose the Scrotal Skin Reduction?
Transwomen with discomfort from too much redundant scrotal skin find daily tucking to be much more comfortable after this scrotal skin removal surgery.
These patients are not planning on eventual full vaginoplasty genital reconstruction surgery, because this scrotal skin is used in Genital Reconstruction (GRS) for creation of the vaginal lining. However, they are more comfortable with their daily tucking after skin reduction and possible simultaneous orchiectomy.
What is the typical recovery period after Scrotal Skin Reduction?
The recovery is very similar to that of Bilateral Orchiectomy. Dr. Keelee MacPhee performs this surgery under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis, so that patients go home the same day. Pelvic compression and icing are imperative to ease swelling and discomfort from this surgery. Patients are typically able to return to light duty in 1-2 weeks, and then full exercise and lifting in 4-6 weeks.
