Gynecomastia is a condition of over-developed breasts in men that can result from heredity, hormonal changes or obesity. Men with this condition often have excess localized fat and/or glandular tissue development, and sometimes excess skin in the breast area. Gynecomastia can occur in one or both breasts.
Depending on the patient’s particular breast structure, Dr. MacPhee may reduce breast size in men through a surgical reduction, liposuction or a combination of the two. The result is a firmer and flatter chest with a more masculine contour.
Gynecomastia surgery
Gynecomastia surgery is a breast reduction or mastectomy specifically for men who have this condition. For breast development in young men with excellent skin elasticity, we try to minimize scars to be only around the nipple and anticipate the skin will shrink down to conform to the underlying chest wall after the excess breast tissue is removed. We directly remove the concentration of breast tissue underneath the nipple and areola, and then use liposuction to feather out the contour of the chest.
For very large male breasts (and potentially an older patient who does not have firm skin), we will potentially do a top surgery bilateral mastectomy with free nipple grafts.
Postop care involves a compression vest and limited lifting/activities for one month. The patient will need to avoid chest exercises that would stretch scars for three to four months.
